A power tower or workout tower is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment you can add to your home gym.

A power tower allows you to do pull ups, chin ups, dips, vertical knee raises (VKR), leg raises, and push-ups. These are powerful exercises to strengthen and tone your upper body, back, and abs.

There are lots of power towers to choose from. I’ve tried to narrow things down to the 10 best power towers.

First, let’s look at the factors you need to think about when choosing your power tower.

Critical Power Tower Considerations

Price – Very few of us normal people can pretend like price is no object. A power tower is an investment in your health and fitness. At the same time, you want to get your money’s worth. If you’re not sure how much you will use your power tower, then go for one of the lower priced models. If you know you’re rough with equipment, then the more expensive power towers will probably serve you better.

Product Weight – Power towers tend to be heavy. Many of them weigh more than 100 pounds. Make sure you’ll be able to assemble it close to the area where you intend to use it.

Weight Limit – Make sure the power tower can handle your weight. Most power towers can take weights up to 250 or 300 pounds. If you want to do dips or pull ups while wearing a weight vest, be sure to take that total weight into account.

Stability – The stability of your power tower will depend on several factors. One will be how well made the pieces are. Another factor will be how level your floor is. In some cases you can increase stability by placing the power tower on a workout mat.

Durability – The structural components of power towers are metal tubes help together by bolts and welded joints. These parts should last many years. However, the handgrips and padding will be made out of materials that can quickly show their age. Also, in general, power towers should not be stored outdoors. At the very least you will want to put it on a covered patio.

Space Requirements – I’ve included the dimensions of the assembled power towers. However, keep in mind, you will need more space around your power tower. If you’re planning on doing push-ups or sit ups, then you’ll need enough room to stretch out your body. Make sure you are using the dimensions of the assembled power tower and NOT the dimensions of the shipping box!

Height Requirements – Don’t forget you’ll need head room when you’re doing pull ups. If your power tower is 83 inches high, then you’ll need another 11 or 12 inches for your head. That means, you should only set it up in a place where the ceiling is at least 95″ or 7′ 11″.

Power Requirements – Power towers do not have any components that require electric or battery power.

Design – Most power towers have stations for pull ups, dips, and vertical knee raises. In addition, most of the ones I’ve included in this article have a push-up station. If you want to do VKR, then it’s worthwhile to have a padded backrest and padding for your arms and elbows.

Assembly – All of these power towers require you to assemble them. They usually come with the tools you will need. However, it’s best to use your own socket wrenches. Be sure to use the right size socket for each bolt and nut. It may also be easier to assemble your new power tower if a friend or family member can help you.

Assembly tip – At the beginning tighten nuts and bolts hand tight. Only after everything is assembled and your power tower is level, then tighten nuts and bolts according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Buying Online – Be sure to check the seller’s return policy before you buy. You can almost always return a power tower within a couple of weeks after purchasing. I suggest you buy your top choice and use at home. If it’s not right for you, then return it according to the return policy.

When you think about buying a power tower, you know you’re making an investment in your health and fitness. I’m sure you’re willing to spend as much money as you need to.

However, price is still an important consideration for most of us. I’ve grouped these power towers into the following price ranges:

Power Towers Over $400

Stamina X Fortress Power Tower

Dimensions: 57 x 48.5 x 85 inches Stamina X Fortress Power Tower

Product Weight: 150 lbs

Weight Limit: 250 lbs

The Stamina X Fortress Power Tower allows you to do several variations of pull ups, push-ups, sit ups, dips, vertical knee raises, and plyometric box jumps.

The plyobox features a non-slip jumping surface and is adjustable. You control its height from 16 to 24 inches in convenient 2 inch increments.

In addition to box jumps you can do one leg jumps, step ups, toe taps, and single leg squats.

The Stamina X Fortress Power Tower requires assembly. The manual gives you easy to follow assembly instructions. Assembly takes about 1 hour. The package includes a couple of tools, but you’ll find it much better to use your own socket wrenches.

The Stamina X Fortress Power Tower does not require any accessories. Stamina has included everything you need in a power tower with this product.


Power Towers $200 – $400

 

Fitness Reality X Class High Capacity Multi Function Power Tower

The Fitness Reality X Class High Capacity Multi Function Power Tower allows you to do several variations of pull ups, push-ups, sit ups, dips, and vertical knee raises.

This power tower features an angled backrest and forearm cushions. The handles are adjustable so that you can do different types of movements.

The power tower can be attached to the floor for extra stability, but most owners use theirs without taking this added step.

The Fitness Reality X Class High Capacity Multi Function Power Tower requires assembly. The manual gives you easy to follow assembly instructions. Assembly takes between 1 – 2 hours depending upon how fast you work. Assembly will be easier if you have a metric socket wrench on hand.

This power tower is meant to be used indoors. It’s heavy so you’ll want to put it in a place where it can stay up throughout the year.

NOTE – This is the same power tower as the IRONMAN Triathlon X Class Multi-Function Power Tower. The company is in the process of rebranding some of its products as Fitness Reality.
 

XMark Deluxe Power Tower and Heavy Bag Stand XM-2842

Dimensions: 62 x 54.5 x 94 inches XMark Deluxe

Product Weight: 123 lbs

Weight Limit: XMark does not publish a weight limit for this power tower. This question gets asked a lot. I saw reports in forums of people up to 300 pounds using it without any problem.

Assembly: Required

What makes the XMark Deluxe Power Tower unique is the addition of the heavy bag workout station. It can handle a bag weighing up to 100 lbs.

The tallest part of the tower is the heavy bag hanger. It’s about ten inches higher than the pull up bar. That means you should have no problem doing pull ups with an eight foot ceiling.

Do you really like to take out your aggression on your punching bag? If so, then you may find this tower shifting a bit with each punch. The tower has weight posts that can handle either Olympic or standard plates for added stability.

The XMark Deluxe Power Tower requires assembly. You need 17mm and 14mm wrenches for the installation and it’s best to use a ratchet.

MORE – You may also want to put your tower on a heavy duty mat to keep it in place.
 

Body Power Multi-Functional Power Tower

Dimensions: 48 x 48.2 x 82 inches Body Power Power Tower

Product Weight: 84 pounds

Weight Limit: 250 pounds

The Body Power Multi-Functional Power Tower features grips and handles that allow you to do 19 different exercises. You can do pull ups, chin ups, leg raises, dips, sits ups, and more.

Unlike some power towers, this product does not have handles that are suitable for push-ups.

There is actually a bit of a question as to how much weight this equipment is designed to handle. On the one hand, the Product Description states the Weight Capacity is 300 pounds.

However, in one of the answered questions, the manufacturer says, “Product is suitable for users weighing 250 pounds or less.”

To be on the safe side, I would not suggest this power tower if you weigh more than 250 pounds.

This power tower comes in two color patterns: black or black and white. The all black version will set you back a few more bucks.
 

ProGear 275 Extended Weight Capacity Power Tower Fitness Station

Dimensions: 43 x 38 x 84 inches ProGear 275

The ProGear 275 is a good piece of equipment if you want a moderate priced home gym.

This tower has the features you expect in a power tower such as the handles and grips to do pull ups, chin ups, dips, knee raises, and push-ups.

The people at ProGear realize that not everyone is tall. Therefore, they provide a little step support to help shorter users easily reach the chin up and pull up handles.

Another nice feature is the ability to move the dip arms up and out of the way. This can make it easier to do pull ups.

MORE – The ProGear 275 does not need to be attached to the floor, However, you may want to put your tower on a heavy duty mat for extra stability.

Power Towers Under $200

 

Titan Power Tower Bench Workout Station

A stand out feature of the Titan Power Tower is the attached bench. The padded bench is 43.5 inches long which should be adequate for more users. Unfortunately, the bench is fixed in place and can’t be tilted up.

Of course, the bench means this power tower is a lot longer than most others.

The Titan Power Tower allows you to get a balanced workout of pull ups, push-ups, dips, knee raises, and bench press exercises.
 

Confidence Olympic Power Tower V.2 Black

Dimensions: 45 x 52 x 84 inches Confidence Olympic

Product Weight: 69 pounds

Weight Limit: 220 pounds

The Olympic Power Tower by Confidence Fitness is an inexpensive piece of equipment with a small footprint.

It features a push-up station with padded handles and a dip station. You can also do regular pull ups and close grip pull ups.

The vertical knee raise station has padding for your elbows and back.

You’ll find it easy to assemble especially if you use your own socket set.
 

Docheer Adjustable Height Power Tower

The Docheer Adjustable Height Power Tower is one of the few power towers on the market that offers an adjustable height feature.

The height of the pull up bar can be set at:

  • 2150 mm / 84.6 inches
  • 1980 mm / 78.0 inches
  • 1810 mm / 71.2 inches
  • 1640 mm / 64.6 inches

This is a great feature if you know both short and tall people will be using your power tower.

Of course, with other power towers, if necessary, a shorter person can use a small step stool to reach the pull up bar.

This power tower makes it easy for you to do pull ups, chin ups, dips, and vertical knee raises.

It features padded hand grips and padding for your elbows and back.

Though the Docheer Power Tower does not have a push-up station, you can support your feet on the bottom cross bar and do decline push-ups.
 

Gold’s Gym XR 10.9 Power Tower

Dip station – the tower features two support steps which make it easy to position yourself for knee raises and dips.

Push-Up station – with padded hand grips.

The XR 10.9 Power Tower is easy to assemble in less than one hour. As with most “assemble yourself” equipment your best bet is to use your own socket set.

MORE – The Gold’s Gym Power Tower does not need to be attached to the floor. However, you might want the added stability that comes from placing it on a mat.
 

Weider Power Tower

Honorable Mention

Here are three power towers that are worthy of your consideration. I’ll explain in my comments why they didn’t make my main list.

Bowflex BodyTower

Dimensions: 77 x 50 x 84 inches Bowflex BodyTower

Product Weight: 120 pounds

Weight Limit: 300 pounds

Assembly: required

The Bowflex BodyTower features handgrips, sling straps, a back pad, and chart showing various exercise movements.

It’s a fine looking power tower with just one flaw. As of the time I’m writing this report, Amazon states, the BodyTower “usually ships within 3 to 4 months.” If you are patient, then this could well be the power tower for you.
 

Stamina 1700 Power Tower

Dimensions: 54.5 x 48 x 85.25 inches Stamina 1700

Product Weight: 94 pounds

Weight Limit: 250 pounds

The Stamina 1700 Power Tower has all the features you would expect in a medium priced power tower.

If you’re in the market for a power tower but don’t have a large budget, you should take a close look at the Stamina 1700.

However, as of the time I’m writing this report, Amazon states, the 1700 “usually ships within 1 to 2 months.” If you are patient, then this could be a good choice.
 

Stamina 1690 Power Tower

Dimensions: 50 x 41.5 x 81.5 inches Stamina 1690

Product Weight: 61 pounds

Weight Limit: 250 pounds

Assembly: required

The Stamina 1690 Power Tower is perfect if you’re looking for a compact and lightweight addition to your home gym.

Most power towers weigh over 100 pounds. This one is only 61 pounds. That’s great if you know you’re going to have to move your tower from time to time.

Especially, if you are on a tight budget, the Stamina 1690 can work for you. As of this writing, it’s selling on Amazon for under $90. Not only that, it gets rave 5-star reviews.

So, why didn’t I include it in my main listing? It’s not really made to do leg raises or vertical knee raises. It doesn’t have any support for your back.

Some users say they are able to do vertical knee raises. However, I think if you’re really interested in adding that movement to your workouts, you should invest in a power tower that easily accommodates them.

If your main interest is having a great piece of equipment for pull ups and dips, then take a close look at the Stamina 1690.


Accessories

In general, you’ll find you don’t need any accessories to go with your power tower.

There is one possible exception.
ProSource Puzzle

Some users find their power tower is a bit wobbly when they do pull ups or dips.

One solution is to attach the power tower to the floor. However, that’s not always a good solution. For example, very few power towers are built to be attached to the floor.

Another solution is to place your power tower on a workout mat.

One popular option is the ProSource Puzzle Exercise Mat. These are half inch thick interlocking foam tiles. A package of these covers 24 sq ft which is perfect for putting underneath a power tower.
